As a first step while considering volunteering with Small Projects Istanbul, please take a moment to watch our short informational video at the very top of this page, then carry on to the steps below to make your application.

  1. Before volunteering on any of Small Projects Istanbul (SPI) project, each volunteer must carefully read the Volunteer Guidelines and the Release and Waiver of Liability, fill out the Volunteer Information Form and check the box indicating agreement and acceptance.
  2. When you have completed the Volunteer Form please print it out hand deliver it to a representative of SPI along with a copy of your personal identification (copy of current driver’s license or copy of Passport) before you volunteer.
  3. Each Volunteer is strongly encouraged to have adequate medical or health insurance coverage in effect, and to maintain proof of such insurance on their person at all times.
  4. Each Volunteer is strongly encouraged to obtain all vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for Turkey and Syria, and to carry record of such vaccinations during your involvement with SPI.

SPI is run by a dedicated team of volunteers from Syria, Turkey, Australasia, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Europe who sustain our Turkish, English and German language classes for children and adults as well as our homework support club, music, art, sport and other enrichment programs.

They may also help with   communications, grant writing and other admin tasks, or even provide childcare while parents attend the Olive Tree Craft Collective sessions.

Please see our schedule  for activities and times that match your skills and availability.

We believe consistency and safety are of paramount importance to the health of the child. Please make sure you read and understood this document. These simple guidelines will help ensure children have the boundaries they need to develop into well-rounded adults. Don’t hesitate to say NO if the need arises. We ask you to always consider and protect the youngest child by adhering carefully to these procedures. Please report any concerns or incidences or poor health in children i.e. head lice, sores, bruising or infections.
Please be practical and consider we are working in a conservative area. Dress accordingly.
Arrive 15 minutes early to set up. Scan for safety – ensure poisons and sharps are up high and there are no trip hazards (like electric cords) present. Ensure dangerous items like medications, scissors etc are put away. Baby swing is for UNDER 2 YEARS OLD, place up high when not in use. Items not suitable for babies must be put away – look out for small choke hazards like beads. Anything smaller than a Duplo block is unsuitable for children under 3 years.
Keep entrance/exit clear – that means all shoes in the shoe box. WALKING ONLY – SITTING WITH EATING. Keep clear of glass windows – no tapping or banging on glass. Do not sit on stacked chairs or tables. Enhance the learning experience by mixing your team throughout the group; in the front, middle and back of the class. Please pack up and remove rugs before using Play-Doh. Use Blu-tak (not sticky tape) on whiteboards.
Allow 15 minutes at end of class for cleaning up – set an alarm on your mobile if you need to. We encourage children to assist in this. Please leave the area clean and ready for the next class. e.g. sweep floors, empty bin, flush toilet, clean white boards, stack chairs/tables. It is helpful to put out shoes in pairs. Children need time to put their shoes on. Pack up all toys into correct boxes etc – please ensure all pieces are replaced in the right box and boxes are put up high out of harm’s way. Small boxes on top of big boxes. Transition the exit in small groups. Please note: Assistance with rug cleaning is appreciated after your workshop.
Know how to exit all children through the door. Emergency contacts are listed on the fridge.
